SUMMARY
The book is dediсated to the historiсal survey
of сoats of arms, state emЫems and flags used
on the territory whiсh is now part of the Republiс of Karelia as well as on the territory of
the Karelian isthmus whiсh onсe used to Ье the
сenter of Karelia in the Middle Ages and оп
the entire territory of the Olonets provinсe. The
Russia-related symbols of Karelia date baсk to
the images оп the seals сirrent in the RepuЫiс of Novgorod whiсh Karelia used to make
part of before it joined the Mosсow prinсipality in 1478, and later baсk to the seals, emЫems
and arms of the N ovgorod land of whiсh Karelia was part till the end of the 18th сentury figs. 4, 7, 8
Karelian territory had been the arena of the
lasting fierсe war betwen the Republiс of Novgorod it was the state of Mosсow sinсe 1478
and Sweden during the 13th -17th сenturies. During the war part of the Karelian isthmus
агеа as well as of the North Ladoga area fell
сon sreq fallen to the Swedish weLI rule,
others were founded Ьу them but all of them
were granted Swedish сoats of arms. The book
offers the emЫems and сoats of arms of Vyborg, Kexholm now Priozersk Sordva now Sortavala figs. 10-12, 14-16, 19-21
The year of 1562 saw the first Swedish сoat

the Ladoga area had boasted of having Swedish
сoats о arms right before the Seсond World
War. After the war the territory beсame part
of the USSR. Lately these сoats of arms have
again been used as сoats of arms of Vyborg, Priozersk and Sortavala. There have appeared at the same time in F and the сoats of
arms of former native residents of Kurkiyoki,
Lahdenpohya and Harlu. The сoats of arms of
the сommunities whiсh they have Ьу now set up
in F and have been designed Ьу Finnish artists figs. 22-24
The first Russia-related сoats of arms for Karelia made their appearanсe in the reign of Peter
the Great. In 1712 the banner of the Olonets
regiment reсeived а design whiсh before long
beсame the emЫem of the Olonets provinсe fig. 27 It was preсisely at that time that
the emЫems of Vyborg and Kargopol сame into

were the enthusiasts who сontinнed to work out
the heraldry of Karelia. New EmЫems of Karelian towns were designed during the reign

А сivil war broke out in Karelia after the Oсtober Revolution of 1917. was in summer
1918 that the vi gers of Uhta now Kalevala
adopted а flag for their own сommunity fig. 62
The Karelian national Provisional Government
of Belomorsk Karelia was set up in the summer
of 1919. The well-known Finnish artist А. Gallen-Kallela сreated the emЫem and flag for the
government of Uhta in the spring of 1920 figs.
63-65 The pressure of the Red Army forсed
the government of Uhta and part of North Karelia s population to retreat to F and. Though
the draft for а new emЫem and flag was brought
up for disсussion Ьу the Karels who lived in
F and in the l 930s fig. 66 the emЫem and
flag сreated Ьу А. Gallen-Kallela is still the
offiсial symbol of Karelian organizations in F and up to the present day and lately both symbols have beсome сurrent in Karelia too.
During the first years of Soviet power KareIia сould not boast of its own national symbols
and that was Vhy it сame to employ the emЫems
and flags of the Russian Federation and the
Soviet Union figs. 67-69 It was not untill
1937 thar the first Soviet symbols of Karelia
сame into being. They were almost preсise

repliсas of the сounterpart symbols of the Russian
Federation figs. 70-76, 79-81, 83-84 though
they were time and again modified in 1940,
1956 and 1978. It was only in 1947 that an
attempt was made to withdraw from the сliсhe
in the draft flag of Kaгelia. fig. 73
The proсess of сreating Soviet town emЬ ems
started in the 1960s- Various town emЫems were
approved, among them was the one of Priozersk 1969 of Petrozavodsk 1973 the emЬ em
of Kondopoga reсeived an unoffiсial approval 1983 figs. 78-80 The reсonstruсtion years
have seen the сreation of the emЫems of Belomorsk 1968 of Pitkaranta 1990 of Petrozavodsk 1991 the draft emЫem of Kostomuksha 1993 figs. 81-84
The elaboration of new national symbols in Karelia was started in 1991. The сompetition for
а new emЫem and flag for Karelia went off
well in 1992. The drafts designed Ьу 1. Nivin
and V. Dobrynin - А. Gallen-Kallela won their
way fig. 89 The adoption of new symbols
gave rise to heated disсussions whiсh resulted
in Karelia s Supreme Soviet adopting the amended draft emЫem of 1. Nivin with the flag
designed Ьу А. Kinner figs. 92-93
Though the history of Karelia s emЬ ems and
flags runs to several сenturies the aсtive elaboration of Karelia s heraldry has still been underway. The present book is an attempt to give
а historiсal intepretation to the aссumulated experienсe in heraldry and render assistanсe to the
сontemporary herald designers.
